steilneset memorial study
Architect: Peter Zumthor and Louise Bourgeois
Location: Vardø, Norway
The Steilneset Memorial commemorates the trial and execution of 91 people suspected of witchcraft in Vardø in the seventeenth century. The memorial has a certain tension within it; no doubt due to the heavy content and precarious position atop a cliff, but also formally and ideologically. There is a constant dialogue between regular and arbitrary elements, which is seen in the regular placement of the structural supports versus the randomly placed windows; and between mass and openness, seen between the dark glass pavilion and the 125 meter long floating timber structure.
Structured primarily as a precedent study of an existing building, the project goal was to use analytic drawing and modeling as a means of reconstructing the design process—revealing and reestablishing the thought patterns that formed the building’s design priorities. These discoveries were then re-presented and analyzed through a comprehensive set of drawings and documentation.
